  • The opening of the film provides us with an overwhelmingly negative view of love and marriage.
Andy Dufresne’s wife is having a passionate affair with a golf pro while her husband sits outside in his car with a gun and a bottle of whiskey. As he drunkenly contemplates his next move, the Ink Spots song “If I Didn’t Care” plays. The lyrics are telling: “If I didn’t care, would I feel this way? / If this isn’t love, then why do I thrill?” The implication is that Andy loves his wife and is so jealous that he could do anything. In court, the lawyer for the prosecution seems to share this viewpoint, telling the jury that if Andy had killed his wife and her lover in “a hot-blooded crime of passion,” his actions could at least be understood, if not condoned. At this stage in the film, we don’t know if Andy actually murdered the adulterous pair. At the trial, Andy comes across as rather cold and clinical in his defence. The judge says he is “chilled to the bone” by what he perceives as Andy’s lack of emotion. Still, the audience is unsure as to whether or not Andy is guilty.

 2. Later in the film, Andy confides in Red that he did not know how to show his wife that he loved her. She used to complain that he was a hard man to know, and Andy now believes that, although he didn’t pull the trigger, he was responsible for her death by driving her into the arms of another man in search of love. Although he has achieved greater self-knowledge, it is too late for Andy to do anything about it.

Obviously, in the confines of Shawshank Prison, there are no opportunities for the men to have normal relationships. Bogs and his friends, referred to as the “bull queers,” are violent rapists. They engage in a disturbing perversion of love; Bogs views Andy’s initial rejection of his advances as Andy playing “hard to get” and says that he likes that. Red warns Andy that Bogs has taken a liking to him, and Andy asks if he should tell them he is not a homosexual. Red tells him that Bogs and his cronies are not homosexual either. To them, sex is all about power and control. They are not genuinely attracted to Andy but want to abuse and hurt him, using rape as their weapon.

Bogs and the rest of his gang corner Andy in the laundry storeroom. Andy grabs a handful of chemical powder, warning Bogs, “If you get this in your eyes, it will blind you.” Bogs, with an evil, predatory smile, says, “Honey, hush.” The affectionate term “Honey” reinforces Bogs’s warped perversion of love. Andy is violently assaulted, a pattern that continues until he ingratiates himself with the guards by organising their finances. After that, he is protected, and the next time Bogs attacks Andy, he is beaten so badly by Hadley that he is left permanently disabled.

3. There are brief references to marriage in the film, but they do not paint a particularly happy picture. One of these moments occurs when Andy, tarring a roof with some of the other convicts, overhears Hadley complain that a legacy from his brother will be taxed so heavily that it is hardly worth having. Andy approaches him and asks, “Mr Hadley, do you trust your wife? … What I mean is, do you think she’d go behind your back, try to hamstring you?” Hadley is so outraged at what he perceives as an insult to his ability to control his home life that he drags Andy to the edge of the roof and threatens to throw him off.

There is one positive view of love in the film. Andy and Red share an incredibly close bond, although there is no physical attraction between them. In an interview, Morgan Freeman describes the film as “a love story between two men.” Theirs is a deep, platonic relationship that sustains them over the decades of imprisonment. They both grow over the course of their time together and, although Andy escapes alone, he ensures that Red knows how to join him in Mexico. He leaves a letter and cash in a wall for Red.

Andy and Red’s reunion is, in many ways, a typical Hollywood romantic ending. Red approaches Andy along a pre-arranged place, and Red finds it when he is released. He travels to Zihuatanejo, and his reunion with Andy is set to Thomas Newman’s beautiful instrumental piece “So Was Red.” When Red sees his old friend, his face lights up and the men walk towards each other before embracing on a perfect, sandy beach.
